When does the ‘Bama Rush’ documentary come out?

An in-depth look at the inner workings of sorority life is headed to Max soon.

Bama Rush, a documentary following hopeful recruits into the University of Alabama’s sororities, has been in the works for awhile. Filmmakers followed a group of women as they rush the university’s various sororities in 2022, and months of subsequent pushback from University of Alabama sororities, as well as the university itself, have only elevated the upcoming documentary to greater prominence. Audiences are eager to set their sights on the controversial film, and they don’t have long to wait. Its official release is finally looming, after an excruciating wait.

Bama Rush release date

Bama Rush is almost upon us. The documentary is set to arrive on Max, formerly HBO Max, on May 23.

The documentary, produced by Vice Studios, followed the entire recruitment process for the University of Alabama’s sororities through the 2022 rush season. In an interview with The New York Times, the film’s director, Rachel Fleit, explained that the documentary aims to “explore college life, sisterhood, and all the joys and complexities of what it means to be a young woman today, following several women from the University of Alabama.”

Most of the controversy surrounding Bama Rush is centered around the sororities, and potential recruits, rather than the university at large. Concerns over the film’s effect on Greek life as a whole ran rampant when reports first emerged of a documentary in progress, and many of the young women who lent their experiences to the crew were encouraged to maintain privacy. In the direct aftermath of filming, TikTok exploded with differing opinions from each side of the Bama Rush discussion. Some people urged their fellow PNM (Prospective New Members) to avoid talking about their rush experiences, while others happily shared their stories for the world to see.
