‘Once I looked at Sam and Lily I just fell apart’: The Weeknd couldn’t save his tears at ‘The Idol’ Cannes premiere

Well, the audience will certainly have a reason to cry.

Aside from criticism and an explicit case study on women’s bodies, The Idol seems to have also provided Abel Tesfaye, or The Weeknd, an unmatched friendship with Sam Levinson and Lily-Rose Depp.

The extent of this newfound bond between the stars and the director of the upcoming contentious Max series occurred during the International Film Cannes Festival. At the event, the cast and crew presented the first screening of the new series, which received a 5-minute standing ovation – which by Cannes standards, isn’t a lot. Nonetheless, the moment was enough to bring The Idol’s director Levinson to tears, and Depp was soon following. Tesfaye, who is also the executive producer, admitted he couldn’t hold back the tears after seeing the duo cry.

The Idol has already been at the ending tail of criticism and backlash on social media, for its exaggerated and downright unnecessary depictions of nudity – even though the series has yet to reach Max for all to see. Nevertheless, the five official reviews hailing from attendees at the event, have already given a whopping 17% on RottenTomatoes. Yes, out of 100.

Almost doomed to fail from the audience reception, the series might be heading to a surprising release, for all those wishing to ‘hate watch’ the show. Regardless of opinions, though, the cast and the crew seem less than bothered, as they continuously dismiss criticism and the widespread of “mean and false things,” as Depp described. Moreover, from their presence at the festival alone, the cast and crew seem wholly proud of their work on set, disregarding any negativity.

The Idol will reach Max on June 4.
