Inadvertently co-opting the title of his upcoming Batman reboot, James Gunn made a move that was both brave and bold when he announced to the world he’d no longer be wading into the weeds to debunk DCU rumors.
To be fair, it felt like an inevitable evolution of his online strategy when the co-CEO seemed to spend an inordinate amount of time pouring cold water over all sorts of speculation, the majority of which anyone with half a brain could spot as being false from a mile away.
However, he seems to be substituting one exercise in online futility for another, after SnyderVerse supporters unsurprisingly took issue with Gunn claiming the only DC Comics adaptations deemed as being required viewing before The Flash are Michael Keaton’s Batman and Batman Returns, the latter of which was released 31 years ago.
As much as he tried to offer a justifiable explanation for what was always going to be a controversial call, some folks still weren’t having it.
Not only that, but he was then forced to repeat himself almost word-for-word, although using the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as an explanation as to why the last decade of the DCU should be disregarded went down about as well as you’d expect.
At this point, maybe it’s best for Gunn to restrict his Twitter feed to important updates only, and scale back his replies to furious fans even further. Then again, he’s been happy to admit he enjoys getting into the thick of it, so perhaps it’s just a fact of life everyone has to deal with.
