As two decade-old universes end thanks to ‘The Flash,’ DC rubs it in by reminding us of happier times

Way to make us feel better, DC.

It’s one of those weird cosmic coincidences that The Flash movie is coming out just as The Flash TV series is ending. Despite the Ezra Miller vehicle being announced the very same year the CW show first hit screens — back in 2014 — it’s taken Warner Bros. the entire length of the popular superhero series’ run to make it into theaters. Adding an extra wrinkle of irony into the mix is that these two projects mark the ends of two separate universes — the Arrowverse and the original DCEU.

Given this, it almost seems rather tone-deaf of the official DC Twitter page to be reminding fans of these two franchises of the days when they were in ruder health. While promoting the series finale of The Flash, DC brought back a clip from the time when Miller’s Scarlet Speedster came cowl-to-cowl with Grant Gustin’s Barry Allen in 2020’s “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover miniseries.

This unexpected Arrowverse/DCEU crossover was the most shocking and fan-pleasing moment in the “Crisis” event and was actually something Warner Bros. made happen, which heavily suggested bigger plans to synergize the two universes down the line. By the looks of things, though, this came to naught — likely in part due to the ever-changing leadership on the DC cinematic side of things — as word has it that Gustin will not cameo in The Flash movie.

Although, if DC’s ill-timed post ends up being a sneaky hint at, say, Miller showing up in The Flash series finale, then maybe all will be forgiven. The last episode airs on The CW this Wednesday, May 24.
