‘Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse’ directors dance around the cameo question everyone wants answered

Such is the life of a Marvel movie employee.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is closing in on theaters, and it just can’t seem to shake the Spider-Man: No Way Home bug that the Marvel Cinematic Universe bit us with back in Dec. 2021.

Indeed, while the Spider-Verse films seem to fly high above even the most beloved of the live-action Spider-Man plights, fans of the hero simply seem addicted to the notion of more cameos from Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland these days. And while those fans aren’t going to rest until they get some answers (in approximately one week), no one knows determination like a cameo-hungry Marvel fan, and they seem determined to get to the bottom of things ahead of time.

Luckily, the film’s three helmsmen haven’t fallen for any tricks. In an interview with ComicBook, directing trio Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson expertly dodged questions regarding a possible No Way Home reunion in Across the Spider-Verse, simply responding with “anything is possible.”

“We have not thought about anything other than finishing this film and making it the most crazy, awesome film that it can be. There’s plenty of nods all over the place. There’s plenty of rabbit holes that everyone will be able to run down. Anything is possible in the Spider-Verse. That’s the most we can say. This film isn’t even out yet, and there’s a lot to unpack in this movie.”

The game may have already been given away, though; a trailer for the film released two months ago contained references to all three live-action Spideys, while Tom Holland in particular was given an extra special, irate acknowledgement from Oscar Isaac’s Miguel O’Hara.

Maguire-Garfield-Holland or no Maguire-Garfield-Holland, we’re fully expecting Across the Spider-Verse to absolutely knock our socks off several times over, as Into the Spider-Verse did before it. The “big three” Spider-Men may attract a crowd, but it’s Shameik Moore, the voice of Miles Morales, that boasts that special, inimitable x-factor that helps make the Spider-Verse franchise what it is.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is due in theaters on June 2.
