The ‘Deadpool 3’ rumors need to be true, if only to rescue the reputation of a royally wasted mutant

Do we sense a redemption arc?

Quite a few exciting rumors are swirling around Deadpool 3, but the latest might be the most thrilling.

We’re here for far more Wolverine than originally expected — so long as they don’t go the X-Men Origins: Wolverine route — and for plenty of Ryan Reynold’s ad-libbing, but the movie’s premier quality might be outside of its leading man. News that several X-Men favorites could be joining Hugh Jackman for a major return is taking the fandom by storm, particularly where one underused character is concerned.

James Marsden’s Cyclops was utterly wasted across the original run of X-Men films, and rumors of his return are giving the fandom hope for a redemption. Marsden was spectacular as Scott Summers, balancing just the right amount of sass, humor, and cynicism alongside Jackman’s Logan and Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey.

His unexpected death at the outset of the third (and worst) X-Men movie came as a blow to fans of the character, who were deeply disappointed to see him killed off so unceremoniously. His death served a vital purpose in the film’s plot, of course, but that didn’t excuse the squandering of such a popular character. Marsden’s skill in the role only compounded disappointment among fans, who’ve long wished we got more time with the character.

We could be getting our shot with Deadpool 3 if rumors are to be believed, and the fandom couldn’t be more thrilled.

Reports that Marsden, as well as Janssen and Halle Berry, are set to return are unconfirmed, but the X-Men fandom is already taking them as fact. And, as such, they’re in the midst of celebrating Marsden’s big return as Cyclops.

Concerns of yet another wasted Cyclops storyline are also rampant, as viewers promise to swear vengeance against Marvel and Disney if they once again waste Marsden’s talent.

There’s no knowing exactly what to expect when it comes to Deadpool, so Marsden’s rumored return could be a minor aspect of the film, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. While we’d love for him to serve a larger purpose in the third Deadpool flick, any Marsden addition is a good addition. Even if the film only intends to use the returning cast as a gag — à la the last blink-and-you’ll-miss-it X-Men cameo — we’d still be delighted to welcome Marsden back into the fold.
