A claustrophobic sci-fi gem that flopped in the face of rave reactions survives an unmanned streaming mission

High concept, stellar reviews, disastrous financial returns.

Low budget sci-fi has proven to be incredibly hit-or-miss, with a lack of resources proving to be both a blessing and a curse in equal measure. When it came to director Sebastián Cordero’ Europa Report it definitely turned out to be a huge positive, though, even if rave reviews from critics weren’t matched by enthusiasm from the target audience.

On the surface, any claustrophobic and nerve-shredding genre film that ends up being Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes by way of an 80 percent approval rating sounds like one that needs to be tracked down and devoured immediately by anyone with a penchant for intergalactic thrillers with a smattering of cosmic horror thrown in for good measure.

However, Europa Report has only notched a 57 percent user average score on the aggregation site from upwards of 10,000 votes, while a cumulative box office tally of just $125,000 could best be described as tepid. That being said, the on-demand circuit is made for projects exactly like this one to find a new audience long after the fact, with the atmospheric nail-biter currently re-orbiting the streaming ranks 10 years on from its initial release.

Per FlixPatrol, Europa Report has become one of the Top 10 titles on ad-supported platform Freevee, and not even ad breaks can dampen the desire to see what happens when a hardy band of astronauts embark on a perilous mission to explore the possibility of life on one of Jupiter’s moons. Not to throw a spoiler in at the very end, but it does not go well for all involved.
