‘An incredibly unique experience’: Hailee Steinfeld discusses the importance of diversity in ‘Across the Spider-Verse’

She loves the messaging of the movie.

One of the things fans are looking forward to the most in the new movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is an expanded role for multiverse Spider-Woman Gwen Stacy, aka Ghost-Spider, played by Hailee Steinfeld. In a recent interview, she discussed the importance of diversity in the movie.

In addition to Steinfeld, the movie features Shameik Moore as Spider-Man Miles Morales and Luna Lauren Vélez as Miles’ mom Rio Morales. When asked about how this movie compares to some of her other roles (True Grit, Bumblebee) Steinfeld said despite all of them being incredible experiences, there was something about this movie that “just doesn’t compare to anything I’ve done.”

“It’s so special in its own way. It’s so different. I don’t know that I’ve been a part of something that has resonated with as many people around the world like this has. It’s so diverse,” she said, per the San Antonio Express-News.

The thing that’s really special, she said, is the “messaging.” She also loves that the different elements of the film “have touched people around the world. It’s introduced me to people in parts of the world that I didn’t even know my name existed in.”

How about a multiverse version of Steinfeld? What would that look like?

“I would like to think and I would hope she would look like Spider Gwen, and be as daring and as bold and as ambitious as her. I would imagine she would be the greatest version of myself – everything I want to be and more.”

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on June 2.
