The chances of a long-awaited DCU romance are stronger than ever with James Gunn at the helm

You know the one.

We’ve said it once, and we’ll say it again; when it comes to comic book movies and shows, James Gunn knows what he’s doing. His current track record in that department is nearly spotless, and as a vocal, longtime comics fan, having a creative like him as the top dog of DC Studios should be nothing but good news to any fan of the subgenre.

Of course, that doesn’t mean his every move won’t be healthily scrutinized from here on out; as excited as we should all be for the new DCU, it does still remain to be seen if Gunn sticks the landing with his take on Superman, Batman, Lex Luthor, and the rest of the illustrious library both individually, and with interpersonal dynamics accounted for.

All this to say that Gunn has a lot of micro-goals on his hands with the DCU, and there’s one particular romance that we hope to hope itself gets the proper justice, and we’re all but confident that he’ll be taking a hearty stab at it.

Indeed, putting aside the fact that the couple of Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy is one of the most prominent sapphic romances in all of pop culture, Gunn’s penchant for exploring relationships indicates that, however long we’ll have to wait for it, Harvy will likely find its way to the DCU.

Of course, given that the inaugural chapter of projects only includes a single Batman film, we’ll probably have a ways to go before we get to the meat of Harley’s story, even with Waller on deck. Plus, Joker’s prior relationship to Harley – being an important contextualizing item for her growth – will likely need to happen first if her relationship with Poison Ivy hopes to have the proper narrative meat to it.

And, of course, there were some responses that turned their noses up at the possibility for reasons that I don’t need to explain to you, nor do I need to dignify them with an embed.

Either way, the stage seems to be set for Harvy to eventually make its bow in the DCU, and, as with the rest of this massive undertaking, we reckon the Guardians gaffer is up to the task of ensuring this ever-important queer romance is given the attention it needs.
