Will ‘Star Wars’ fans ever stop arguing over the end of ‘The Rise of Skywalker’? The evidence says no

Some 'Star Wars' fans found the intergenerational passing of the torch uninteresting.

Though four years have passed since the release of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker, some fans remain peeved about a particular detail in the conclusion to the Skywalker Saga.

A debate over the aesthetics of the film broke out in the r/StarWars subreddit when a disgruntled user complained about Rey’s weapon of choice.

The view seems somewhat oblivious to the weapon’s history. Lest we forget, Anakin Skywalker made the lightsaber. It was part of his metamorphosis from Jedi Knight to Darth Vader. Obi-Wan Kenobi’s interception of the weapon during his clash with Lord Vader on Mustafar marked a turning point in the destiny of the Skywalker family. His reclamation made it possible to pass it on to Luke Skywalker, making it a symbol of hope.

However, the significance of the Skywalker lightsaber was lost on some fans, who slammed the narrative and expressed indifference about the history behind it.

Some claimed that Rey buried the Skywalker twins lightsabers and made one of her own. However, according to StarWars.com, Rey held on to the Skywalker heirloom.

Rey’s decision to use Luke’s lightsaber in The Rise of Skywalker was never about her stepping out of Luke’s shadow. Indeed, it’s a powerful symbol of the passing of the torch from one generation to the next. As the bearer of Luke’s lightsaber, Rey embodies his legacy, her mind a capsule of his teachings and the Jedi tradition. It’s not about stepping into the galactic spotlight as an autonomous figure. It’s about honoring the past and embracing her role as his successor.
