‘There’s a new character in there too, so that changes the geometry’: Maitreyi Ramakrishnan on messy romances in ‘Never Have I Ever’

It's a love triangle plus one — or something like that.

Netflix’s hit series Never Have I Ever is back for its epic final season, and there is one question longtime fans of the series can’t help but ask themselves — who is Devi (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) going to end her senior year with? There’s been one heck of a love triangle forming since the first season, and Devi’s head and heart are stuck playing tug of war, but things are only going to get more complicated from here.

In fact, the love triangle we’ve grown accustomed to could be shapeshifting in the upcoming season, but we’re not quite sure in what capacity that might be. Paxton (Darren Barnet) has always been the heartthrob of Sherman Oaks, and Ben (Jaren Lewison) has always been Devi’s arch nemesis, but they both grew to take on new roles to our leading lady in the last three seasons, and we’re (not so) sorry to pick a side here, but we’re totally Team Paxton on this one — no matter what is on the horizon.

Speaking to Extra, the cast shared that the phrase love triangle doesn’t even begin to cover what’s happening in the epic last season of Never Have I Ever:

Lewison: “You’re even getting more than that”
Barnet: “I don’t know what shape it is. I never know what shape is.”
Ramakrishnan: “‘Cause, like, there’s a new character in there too, so that changes the geometry.”

Lewison says that the real word to describe what’s happening is some type of molding clay situation, it changes per episode, and the pairings are never quite going to be what fans expect. Of course, that’s part of the magic of Never Have I Ever; fans simply don’t know what to expect or what’s waiting just over the horizon. There are the usual ups and downs of high school, interesting family dynamics, and friendships to sort through, too, so as we anxiously anticipate Devi’s big decision, we’re also incredibly excited to see what’s next for our other favorite characters, too.

Here’s to Never Have I Ever, the epic final season, and years of laughs and totally relatable moments at Sherman Oaks.
