The revelation that the version of Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on Earth is none other than his friend Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), a Skrull in disguise, begs the burning question: How long has Nick Fury been a Skrull?

In 1995, Fury allied with Talos and the shape-shifting Skrulls in Captain Marvel. In Spider-Man: Far From Home, a shocking truth comes to light: Fury was not unaffected by his interactions with the alien interlopers. A post-credit scene shows Talos and Soren had assumed Fury and Maria Hill’s identities throughout the film, although the exact timeline of their swap remains unclear, as do the whereabouts of the real Nick Fury.

The implications of Talos impersonating Fury and running a Skrull agenda are mind-blowing, especially considering the impending infiltration of Earth. If Talos is a bad faith actor, it is equally disturbing to consider the impact his deception will have on Fury’s relationships. We know that a Skrull has been impersonating the cycloptic founder of the Avengers for a while, but just how long is something fans can’t wait to discover, and it’s poised to be one of Secret Invasion’s major story beats.

Thankfully, the Disney Plus miniseries Secret Invasion is poised to set the record straight. Written by Ali Selim and directed by Kyle Bradstreet, the show will tell the story of Fury and his mission to prevent a group of Skrull rebels from occupying Earth. In the show, he enlists Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman), Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders), and Talos to derail their plans of dominion. There is indeed a possibility that Talos is acting with Fury’s consent, adding an intriguing turn to the story. The show will also star Game of Thrones alum Emilia Clarke as Talos’ daughter, G’iah.

Secret Invasion promises to be a roller-coaster ride of twists as it unravels the enigmatic mysteries of Nick Fury and the Skrulls.

The first episode of Secret Invasion will air on Disney Plus on June 21.
