What is TikTok’s viral ‘Behind Every Hot Girl’ trend?

A hot new trend enters the internet.

When it comes to trends, TikTok is the gift that keeps on giving. The social media platform currently has over one billion users, which makes it so that challenges and memes spread fairly quickly, be it a simple sibling check or the sometimes harrowing Grimace Shake trend.

One of the most recent fads taking over the platform, though, is the Behind Every Hot Girl trend. It’s difficult to track down exactly how this trend kicked off, as it is so widespread across different social media apps, including Twitter. But more important than understanding its origin is to understand what it means and how to participate before the internet collectively moves on.

What is this trend about?

Simply put, the Behind Every Hot Girl trend consists of folks looking back at their teenage years to figure out what made them the attractive person they are today. Typically, users will attribute their hotness to a relatable piece of media they used to (or still do) obsess over. Any type of media can be used for this, from TV shows and movies to songs and comics.

Some TikTokers prefer to join the party by posting a video in a photo format with one slide saying “Behind every hot girl there is a deep history with…” followed by another showcasing the media of their choosing. Meanwhile, others take a simpler approach, uploading a recording of themselves with the same words on the screen.

Some examples of media people are crediting for their hotness include Gossip Girl, as seen above, Taylor Swift’s song “All Too Well,” the official cast recording of the Glee cast, and even the whole series itself.

Among all the TikTok trends one could choose to participate in, this is thankfully one of the harmless ones. So why not join the party yourself?
