Swifties can get a sneak peek at a re-recorded ‘Speak Now’ track in ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ season 2 trailer

Taylor Swift will help us through love, heartache, and healing in season two of 'TSITP.'

The second season of The Summer I Turned Pretty is on the horizon, and the highly anticipated trailer proves that the soundtrack is once again as full of promise, hope, and love as the series itself.

Highlighting the life-long friendships between the Conklin and Fisher families, starting with Susannah and Laurel and then moving to the relationships their children share, TSITP is a love story told in several different chapters, with many different layers. So when part of that love story falls apart after a devastating loss, everyone is affected by it. It’s like pulling a loose thread on your favorite sweater; for one moment, it’s just a tiny spot, a slight change in the fabric — but without realizing it, and quicker than you’d imagine, it’s all fallen apart.

One of the most iconic parts of TSITP is the soundtrack that helps tell their story — navigating the journey each character goes on. In the first season, Taylor Swift was an integral piece of the puzzle, the powerful storyteller who sang her heart out in songs that talked about falling in love and getting your heart broken.

So when the trailer for season two made its highly anticipated debut, lucky fans got their first peek at a song from the upcoming release of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version). To follow along with a heartwrenching storyline and all the ups and downs of love, life, and longing — “Back to December.”

If anyone’s love story fits the model of a Taylor Swift song, it’s that of Conrad and Belly — and while we wish it didn’t, “Back to December” certainly suits where they’re at for most of season two.

“So this is me swallowin’ my pride
Standin’ in front of you sayin’ I’m sorry for that night
And I go back to December all the time
It turns out freedom ain’t nothin’ but missin’ you
Wishin’ I’d realized what I had when you were mine
I’d go back to December, turn around, and make it alright
I go back to December all the time

These days, I haven’t been sleepin’
Stayin’ up playin’ back myself leavin’
When your birthday passed, and I didn’t call
Then I think about summer, all the beautiful times
I watched you laughin’ from the passenger’s side
And realized I loved you in the fall”

The trailer for season two spells out that a significant loss takes place, and while we desperately hoped there was a way to gloss over that or that some miracle would happen and that the clinical trial she signed up for would be the cure we’d all hoped she’d find. The thing is, it’s the loss of Susannah that drives the story forward, even in all of its pain. So as Belly and Conrad fall further apart from each other than ever before, she’s also seeing the way she’s pulled herself away from someone else she loves, Jeremiah.

Yep, while we’re totally Team Conrad, the bond between Belly and Jeremiah is another integral piece of the story, and despite our best judgment, we’re sort of looking forward to seeing that play out too. However, the truth will always remain, Conrad and Belly are meant for one another — and we hope we get some screen time in season two of them realizing that and of Conrad running not just back to December but back to Belly.
