As the world sits through the never-ending Hollywood obsession with established IPs, there’s perhaps not a single franchise that’s seen the injection of life that Ghostbusters has.
After that shaky-at-best attempt at a reboot back in 2016, the campy classics have seen such follow-ups as Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and are gearing up for a dizzying number of upcoming projects including an untitled animated film, a Netflix series, the separate animated series Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, and a prequel series known only as Ghostbusters High. Indeed, there’s a lot of strange things in the Ghostbusters neighborhood these days.
One of the premier pillars of this resurgence is that much closer to rolling up on the big screen once again, too. In an interview with ScreenRant, Ghostbusters legend Ernie Hudson, who first portrayed Winston Zeddemore, all the way back in 1984, confirmed that the untitled sequel to 2021’s Afterlife is all done shooting, with only post-production standing in the way of landing a release date.
“Yeah, we finished, the movie is done, it’s wrapped. Obviously, they’re editing and doing whatever else. I’ve heard rumors the end of the year they’ll push for, or maybe spring next year. I’m thankful that we at least got it done in the can, and now, I’m like everybody else, waiting to see what it all looks like.”
Hudson reprised his role as Winston in Afterlife, and will do so again in the upcoming sequel alongside fellow legacy figures Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Annie Potts, all of whom have been involved with the franchise since the first Ghostbusters.
The sequel is due in theaters on Dec. 20 this year, but with the writers’ strike showing no signs of slowing down – coupled with what’s looking to be an inevitable actors’ strike later this summer – it’s hard to say if Hollywood’s conveyor belt will have what it takes to put the film out by then.
