‘Indiana Jones 5’ isn’t done yet: Box office numbers turn around after a disastrous opening

The end of Indy's journey had an iffy opening, but the box office numbers might be catching up now.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny appears to have somewhat bounced back leading from a lackluster opening weekend as July 4th festivities ramp up, following its initial $60 million domestic box office haul.

After the underwhelming opening, the approaching July 4th holiday gave a much-needed push to the film’s numbers. The film benefited from the fact that Monday was a de facto holiday for many Americans as they approached July 4th celebrations. As a result, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny brought in $11.8 million on Monday, bringing its domestic total to $71 million.

Although the movie’s $130 million global debut gave it an easy number 1 spot at the box office, profit figures so far have fallen short of the film’s enormous $295 million budget. Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore commented on the disastrous opening:

“It’s impressive that a franchise that’s over 40 years old is No. 1 at the box office. But there’s no question there were higher hopes for the debut of this movie. This is Indiana Jones. This is a summer movie icon.”

Box Office Mojo reports that the worldwide gross for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is $142.5 million, with $72.4 million coming from the U.S.A. and Canada, and $70.2 million from other countries worldwide.

Elsewhere, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse roped in $343 million, hoping to overtake Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s $355 million revenue and become the second highest-grossing domestic release of the year.

Dial of Destiny serves as a sequel to 2008’s Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which recorded an astounding three-day debut of $100 million, 15 years ago. Despite having a $185 million budget, Crystal Skull made nearly $790 million in revenue. Dial of Destiny‘s prospects aren’t looking as promising, although its poor debut may be attributed to the film’s lukewarm initial reception from critics and viewers.

Dial of Destiny is the only film in the series neither directed by Steven Spielberg nor conceived by George Lucas. It is also the only one not distributed by Paramount Pictures following Walt Disney Studios’ acquisition of Lucasfilm. In Sept. 2022, Harrison Ford confirmed that it will be the final installment in the adventure series that started with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. The Dial of Destiny stars 80-year-old Ford as the intrepid archaeologist Indiana Jones, who battles the clock to find a fabled dial that has the power to alter the course of history.
