‘Secret Invasion’ just subtly confirmed that a fan-favorite MCU hero is a Skrull

When did the switch take place and what's happened to the original?

Secret Invasion has been playing its cards very close to its chest on which MCU characters are now Skrulls. We know that Gravik’s plan involves infiltrating the highest echelons of power, and that he’s all too aware that to take over the Earth he’ll need to deal with the world’s superheroes.

Just as in the comics’ Secret Invasion, his plan seems to be to have Skrulls pose as MCU heroes. Suspicions have already been raised as to who’s been replaced, with last week making viewers particularly wary of Don Cheadle’s James Rhodes.

Now, those fears may have been confirmed. The closing moments of the episode revealed that Fury’s Skrull wife Varra feels so betrayed by Fury abandoning her she’s signed up with Gravik. But when she retrieves a gun from a safety deposit box, it’s not his voice that comes down the line.

The voice says “St. James Church, one hour,” to which Varra replies “I need to speak to Gravik.” “Yeah, well, you’re talking to me.” It’s not confirmed, but we’d recognize Cheadle’s voice anywhere.

So, if Rhodes really is a Skrull in Secret Invasion, what’s happened to the real one, and when did the switch happen? We know that Rhodes will headline Armor Wars, so perhaps he’s subdued alongside the copied world leaders over in Skrull HQ? We’re thinking when he realizes what’s happened, he won’t be happy.

Let’s hope we get answers very soon, though we now have the prospect of a Skrull wreaking havoc in the War Machine suit coming down the line.
