This article contains spoilers for Secret Invasion episode 4
Emilia Clarke’s G’iah was the most hyped new character in Secret Invasion, with fans very much looking forward to the Game of Thrones icon carving out a space for herself in the MCU. Naturally, there was some consternation when, at the end of last week’s installment, her cover was blown and she was unceremoniously executed by Gravik while trying to escape.
One week later, and episode four immediately resurrected her in a very predictable way. Last week, we saw that Gravik is focused on giving his soldiers the Super-Skrull treatment, which includes the regenerative Extremis ability from Iron Man 3. In a quick flashback, we saw G’iah nah the power-up, heal her chest wound and bounce back good as new.
This is exactly what many fans predicted was going to happen (plus the trailers showed Clarke in scenes we haven’t seen in the show) so the reaction seems to be a weary shrug. As one fan put it on r/MarvelStudios:
“Just started the episode but already kinda frustrated they pulled a fake death with G’iah. Not that it wasn’t a surprise but honestly sick and tired of these fake deaths already, completely ruins the tension.”
It’s also rightly pointed out that this fake death undermines what seems to be the actual death of Talos later in the episode. Well, at least G’iah now has some motivation to step up as an active player on Fury’s side, particularly as her newly acquired Super-Skrull powers will let her go toe-to-toe with the similarly juiced-up Gravik.
Then again, anyone who’s seen Iron Man 3 will remember that Extremis can have explosive side effects, so perhaps any Super-Skrulls have just given themselves a huge Achilles’ heel.
