Today we have a wildly impressive, new trailer for one of this 2012’s most anticipated films, Paul Thomas Anderson‘s The Master, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Both Phoenix and Hoffman look to be giving career best performances and the film itself looks incredibly compelling. For quite some time now The Master has been my pick for Best Picture at the Oscars come this February and this trailer really re-confirms that for me. The camerawork looks fantastic and the unsettling tone that Anderson has established really comes off in the footage below.
For those unfamiliar with the film, check out the plot summary below:
A charismatic intellectual (Hoffman) launches a religious organization following World War II. A drifter (Phoenix) becomes his right-hand man but as the faith begins to gain a fervent following, the drifter finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.
In addition to the trailer, we also have a new poster for the film, which is rather ambiguous. We know that a large part of the film will take place on a boat, so that may be a reason for the water on the poster, but otherwise, like a lot of the finer details surrounding the project, it’s a little bit of a mystery.
What isn’t a mystery though is how the film will be received. You can bet that this will be a favorite amongst come Awards season.
The Master stars Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Amy Adams, Laura Dern, Jesse Plemons and Rami Malek and opens October 12th, 2012.
