Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD was successful. In fact, it managed to sell 120,000 copies during its first week on Xbox LIVE Arcade. That’s an impressive statistic, but it’s one that doesn’t surprise me at all. After all, the series’ first two releases were incredibly popular, and many of us looked forward to this revamp as a way to rekindle fond memories based around those titles.
Although PlayStation 3 and PC versions of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD are still planned for release, Robomodo’s chief (Josh Tsui) believes that the title’s successful debut on Microsoft’s digital service has paved the way for a “fuller game.”
“By making it ‘lower risk’ we were allowed to take some chances, which benefits both developer and publisher,” Tsui told Gamasutra. He also noted that “the prospect of a fuller game is definitely on the table” and that it’s “just a matter of when and how.”
It’s clear that the Xbox LIVE community has spoken, and that there’s still a definite market for these games. However, in order to be successful, the studio must try to stick to the series’ roots if it’s to create another successful skateboarding game named after the venerable trickster. There’s no need to rush something out to market, and there’s absolutely no place for another motion title. That strategy almost booked this digital franchise a one-trip ticket into the abyss. Then again, Robomodo surely learned from those mistakes. Plus, the developer still has two ports and at least one set of DLC to worry about.
