Darren Aronofsky’s Noah has been building hype throughout the past few months with a series of casting announcements involving an impressive list of high-profile actors. The newest announcement, that of Cain and Abel, doesn’t involve quite as high-profile of actors though as IndieWire reports that the roles will be filled by Icelandic actors Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson and Arnar Dan.
If you haven’t heard of them, you aren’t alone. A look through Jóhannesson’s IMDb page shows he has been in 4 feature films, a couple of shorts, and a few TV shows. Most of them are Icelandic and his characters’ names include letters that aren’t even a part of the English alphabet. And, believe it or not, we know even less about Dan, considering he doesn’t even have an IMDb page. How Aronofsky chose these guys I have no idea, but they must have talent if he thinks they can hold their own in a film that features the likes of Russell Crowe and Anthony Hopkins.
The other curious thing about this casting is the characters who were cast. Both the brother who was murdered and his betrayer died long before the story of Noah takes place. From the looks of it, this film may turn into more of a story of the book of Genesis than just the story of Noah.
Despite this peculiar casting, I’m still very excited for Noah. Crowe is always a treat to watch and he should thrive in such a huge and epic role. As excited as I am to watch him play the titular character, I’m just as thrilled about seeing Emma Watson in this film.
Her process of breaking away from being only known as Hermione has begun. With all the films she has coming out in the near future, and the talent she has shown, I think she will successfully turn the Harry Potter heroine into just one role in a long line of memorable characters.
