So far, we’ve brought you a full-length trailer and a number of teaser trailers for Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film The Master. These have been rather helpful in giving us small tastes of the film and letting us know what kind of tone we can expect.
Today, thanks to The Film Stage, we finally have the first official clip from the film. It features Amy Adams and while it’s not even 30 seconds long, it does begin to show us what kind of character she plays.
I actually remember this scene directly from the screenplay. It comes right after “The Cause” has been challenged by a man who claims that having only the will of one man is the basis of cult, a part you may remember from one or two of the trailers.
The interesting thing is that, in the original draft, it was The Master saying the dialogue that Adams is speaking in the clip, which now makes her character seem a lot more defensive of “The Cause,” while The Master merely types away in the background. Hopefully this means that Anderson has expanded her role a bit, something I was rather curious about after reading it.
Anticipation for the film continues to build as festival-goers await its premiere in Toronto and Venice next month.
The Master finally hits theaters on September 14th with an expansion on the 21st.
