Appearing to have officially dropped the word “massacre” from this direct follow-up to 2003’s extremely successful remake of (well, I’m sure you can figure it out), Lionsgate has just released a reasonably creepy poster for the upcoming slasher flick Texas Chainsaw 3D.

Reasons why the studio would drop the coolest word from the recognizable title aside, at the very least this early promotional material is carrying on the brutal tradition of the series.

Unfortunately both 2003’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and its prequel The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning were utter, overly sadistic, crap and now that the original source material (and any inspiration that could be gleaned from an origin story) is used up, I can’t imagine anything remotely worthwhile remains.

Mostly unknown television actors step up to populate this effort with chainsaw fodder which comes from director John Luessenhop (Takers), so we can’t even look forward to seeing familiar faces (get cut off) on screen for Texas Chainsaw 3D.

At the very least let’s hope this sequel leaves behind the torture porn tropes that plagued the first two updates and further pray that this film isn’t worse as a whole.

Texas Chainsaw 3D slashes its way into theaters January 4, 2013 and in the meantime you can check out what is likely to be one of the last inspired things to be associated with this film below.
