Though Assassin’s Creed III has received a lot of hype and press coverage since its initial announcement, publisher Ubisoft has kept surprisingly quiet on the multiplayer aspect of it – at least until now.

Ubisoft Annecy has been announced as the studio heading development on the game’s multiplayer, which will keep the series tradition of having a framework story where individuals compete while all plugged in to several of the series’ trademark Animus units.

This time around, the Animus has become a commercial product, and there will be a full storyline for players to gradually unlock as they level their character up and unlock new files and informational videos. The new feature here is the fact that Ubisoft will create new challenges on a monthly basis to help players in their goal of leveling up and unlocking this content. While details are not yet specific on what types of challenges these will be, it does seem like an intriguing idea.

Other details include the reveal that environmental factors, like dynamic weather, will have an impact on how the multiplayer is played. Players will also be able to carry out special environmental kills with objects like axes and bottles. Finally, revealed multiplayer modes so far include Wolfpack, a wave-based co-op hunting mode, and Domination, a more traditional four-on-four mode.

Assassin’s Creed III is currently scheduled for an October 30 release on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, with the PC version scheduled for November 20, and the Wii U version’s release date still unannounced.
