You know who spends their days wondering what classic films would have been like if James Cameron had directed them? James Cameron does. With his boundless ego fueling a never-ending press run, Cameron laid out to the UK Huffington Post his plans for Jurassic Park, the definitive dinosaur flick that was instead directed by Steven Spielberg.
Apparently, the bidding war for the rights to the book came down to Cameron and Spielberg, with the latter beating him out by only a few hours and saving what would become a Hollywood classic.
It seems that Cameron came to terms with his loss after seeing the finished product, though. Check out this quote below about the darker vision the director had for Jurassic Park:
“But when I saw the film, I realised that I was not the right person to make the film, he was. Because he made a dinosaur movie for kids, and mine would have been ‘Aliens’ with dinosaurs, and that wouldn’t have been fair,” Cameron explained. “Dinosaurs are for 8-year-olds. We can all enjoy it, too, but kids get dinosaurs and they should not have been excluded for that. His sensibility was right for that film, I’d have gone further, nastier, much nastier.”
As much as I hate to admit it, I’m pretty intrigued by this. What exactly could have Cameron done with this film that was in line with his vision? Make it a three hour allegory about the wonders of evolution and the war on creationism? Or just give the dinosaurs more screen time for drawing each other nude?
But as luck and fate would have it, Spielberg’s version is what we were given, and what we are being given again.
