Here we have the first images from a new psychological thriller called Take Shelter, courtesy of Collider, which stars Michael Shannon and Jessica Chastain, and is directed by Jeff Nichols. The film is about a man who dreams of an oncoming apocalyptic storm which may be real or simply a figment of his imagination.

Michael Shannon and director Jeff Nichols previously collaborated on Shotgun Stories, a little scene character drama that really gave Shannon status as a character actor. Jessica Chastain is a likely bet as “Hollywood’s next big thing” as next year she has Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life and will soon start production on John Hillcoat’s depression-era drama The Wettest Country in the World. Take Shelter will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January, more images and a full plot synopsis are below.

Official synopsis:

Curtis LaForche lives in a small town in Ohio with his wife, Samantha, and daughter, Hannah, a six-year-old deaf girl. When Curtis begins to have terrifying dreams, he keeps the visions to himself, channeling his anxiety into obsessively building a storm shelter in his backyard. His seemingly inexplicable behavior concerns and confounds those closest to him, but the resulting strain on his marriage and tension within his community can’t compare with Curtis’s privately held fear of what his dreams may truly signify. Take Shelter features fully realized characters crumbling under the weight of real-life problems.
