After lending their pens to Zombieland and bumped sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, screenwriting duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have just sold a script to Sony for roughly $1 million titled Epsilonwhich brings about a twist to the oft-told robot uprising film.

With Reese and Wernick also set to produce Epsilon, this script will mark new territory for the team who thus far have been known for action comedy films and certainly not sci-fi. Despite this being a divergence, it’s easy to see why Sony was interested in this unique-sounding property.

“Epsilon is set after an initial robot rebellion ended in failure and Earth operates on almost no electronics. The remaining robots seek refuge on a space station and begin to raise their own human lab rats, which they train to act as their agents. The main character is a man who discovers he is more human than he thought.”

Essentially, this sounds like the antithesis for the “Terminator” films (with the humans being the victors for once), with a dash of the human-slave elements from The Matrix.

It even sounds a bit like Neill Blomkamp’s upcoming (and similarly titled) Elysium (which may be officially called Baja Dunes now), in which mankind faces a threat (though of varying kinds) circling Earth in a space station.

Smart, original sci-fi is hard to come by these days, and Epsilon, from that synopsis at the very least, seems to fit the bill. No word yet on when this film would go into production but we’ll keep you posted.

Reese and Wernick have also been rumoured to working on screenplays for a Zombieland sequel as well as the long-proposed Deadpool film.
