The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Casey Affleck is now attached to star in the Warner Bros. film Race To The South Pole, which is being produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck through their production company, Pearl Street.
The film tells the true story of two explorers in the early 20th century racing to be the first man to reach the last unseen territory on the planet, the South Pole. Affleck stars as Englishman Robert Falcon Scott who is ultimately bested by Norwegian Roald Amundsen. Amundsen has yet to be cast.
The film’s writer is the relatively-unknown Peter Glanz, who is coming off his directorial debut The Longest Week. Damon and the elder Affleck’s team-ups have usually proven successful, and Casey Affleck is known for being very selective about his scripts, so for those three to be on board with Glanz’ script, you can be sure it’s something special.
This is a very intriguing story with lots of potential. The challenges those explorers faced attempting to see the last uncharted ends of the earth, with only the minimal resources available at that time, should make for an incredible film.
A director has yet to be named, but one should be decided on soon. Now that Argo is complete, it’s possible that Ben Affleck decides to director his brother himself, but more than likely they’ll decide to bring someone else in.
