Though his Total Recall remake bombed at the box office (domestically at least), director Len Wiseman is still receiving job offers and the most recent one comes in the form of Universal’s reboot of The Mummy.

Prometheus scribe Jon Spaihts penned the script and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are on producing duties, so there is some decent talent already on board. Said to have a contemporary setting, Wiseman says that the film will give “a darker twist on the material” and that it will be “a scarier version.”

Set for a release in Summer 2014, things are apparently moving quickly over at the studio as they’re eager to get the film going. No news on casting but with the way things are moving, you can expect updates shortly.

For me personally, Wiseman’s involvement isn’t a huge draw. Admittedly, I think his Underworld series is alright but I wasn’t terribly impressed with Total Recall. I found it to be rather dull and lacking a strong vision.

Len Wiseman isn’t a terrible director, but he’s not much more than a mediocre filmmaker. And after Universal’s failure with their reboot of The Wolfman, you’d think that the studio would want to go with someone who’s a bit above mediocre, right? Wiseman doesn’t exactly seem like the safest choice for this project.

What do you think though? Excited to see Len Wiseman helm The Mummy reboot?
