Activision has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 will have an optional texture pack installation on the PlayStation 3, when the title launches this November.

The announcement of the optional install originated from a post on Treyarch’s forums by Game Design Director David Vonderhaar, and has since been confirmed by a company representative speaking to Joystiq.

Vonderhaar explained that Black Ops 2‘s texture pack installation will not result in any “significant performance gain”, but is instead intended to reduce strain on the console’s Blu-ray drive during long gameplay sessions. The exact size of the optional install was not announced, however, the developer indicated that it will take up a “non-trivial amount of HDD space”.

According to the forum post, the option has been included due to overwhelming demand by fans.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 launches for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on November 13th, with a Wii U version expected to follow on November 18th. As soon as the full details of the optional texture install on the PS3 are announced we will update this article.
