Since the news broke that Matthew Vaughn’s X-Men: First Class sequel will be titled X-Men: Days of Future Past, speculation has run rampant as to how closely the film will resemble the time travel awesomeness of the Uncanny X-Men comic book arc of the same.

Thanks to Newsarama for their in-depth coverage of a recent panel at the 2012 Montreal Comic-Con, we’ve now learned that Sir Patrick Stewart has again hinted at his return to the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the upcoming film.

When asked directly by a fan during his Q&A panel, the Englishman gave a knowing smile and spoke the words many have been waiting to hear:

“I think there is every possibility.” He then went on to offer more confirmation, saying “yes, I’ll be reprising…” only to be cut off by his son Daniel.

For the uninitiated, Days of Future Past was the name of a popular story arc from The Uncanny X-Men comics in 1981. In a violent future where mutants are incarcerated in internment camps, an older Kitty Pryde transfers her mind into her younger self in an attempt to change the future.

The story alternated between present day and the future timeline, which has led many fans to speculate that Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming film sequel of the same name, would feature the return of characters from the previous X-Men films in an attempt to bridge the two film series.

Time travel? Alternate timelines? It worked for the Star Trek film reboot. Just as that film used Leonard Nimoy’s return as Spock to bridge the two film series, Matthew Vaughn’s upcoming X-Men: Days of Future Past can do the same with Sir Patrick Stewart.

Having him be the one to transfer his consciousness into his younger counterpart as opposed to Kitty Pryde, and having previous actors return to reprise their roles, would be a brilliant move.
