Filmmaker David Fincher has announced that his adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will be shot in 3D, the director’s first foray into the format. He has been interested in it for sometime, according to reports he visited the sets of Tintin and Avatar and became fascinated by the process of it. He does say however in his interview with Collider that “it is cool… when done right”.
I’m particularly sceptical about how 3D is becoming a part of cinema, I think for every positive point there are a number of negative drawbacks. But to see directors like Scorsese, Spielberg and now Fincher taking 3D under their wing we could see an exciting reinvention for the format and see it being used in fascinating and creative ways.
Of course we don’t know when Fincher will ply his trade to working on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, he has yet to finish filming his re-imagining of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and even he admitted to not knowing what is coming next.
