Nothing is currently in development, but a Capcom producer has gone on record as saying that a Resident Evil 2 remake could happen, if the company sees enough demand for the idea.
Speaking to GameSpot, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi revealed the potentially good news saying:
“Just to lay all the cards on the table, that way there’s no rumor-mongering or things like that, no, we are not working on a Resident Evil 2 remake as of now. But if the fans really clamor for it; if there’s a groundswell of support for remaking that game, then I think that’s something Capcom would take under consideration.”
For many survival horror fans, Capcom’s 1998 release of Resident Evil 2 represents a high point in the series. I can personally recall seeing fan requests for a remake of the game as far back as 2002, when the (completely awesome!) Resident Evil remake launched on the GameCube. With that kind of long-term demand by fans, I have little doubt that Capcom will be drowning in support for a RE 2 remake once the word gets out.
With all signs pointing towards Resident Evil 6 moving the franchise even further down the path away from survival horror, the mere possibility of a return to the days of fearful ammo conservation on the streets of Raccoon City is more than enough to get me excited.
Capcom, consider this one long-time fan’s support for a Resident Evil 2 remake.
