While out promoting Steven Spielberg’s upcoming historical drama Lincoln, producer Kathleen Kennedy dropped some updates concerning two future projects, one being the return of prehistoric adventures. Of course, I’m referring to Jurassic Park 4.
Concerning what progress has been made on the hotly anticipated dino-thriller, Kennedy had this to say:
“Writing, writing, writing. It’s really hard to keep these things going when there’s an expectation and a desire by the public and the audience to keep certain franchises going. As filmmakers, we often sit there going, ‘Okay. We have to answer the question, ‘Why do another one?” If you can’t answer that question, you shouldn’t be doing it. It’s tough. We’re trying to come up with a story that makes sense and isn’t going to disappoint people and is, hopefully, going to get people excited and reinvigorate the franchise. We’ve got to start with a script and the story.”
“[The studio] is just like, ‘When?! They don’t care about the agony we’re going through!”
Along with that comment came a collective sigh of relief from fanboys anxiously waiting to see if Hollywood would use Spielberg’s thrilling franchise as just another cash-in blockbuster, but Kennedy’s comments at least show some indication that Jurassic Park 4 is being crafted with proper respect being paid to the source material.
Having Rise of the Planet of the Apes scribes Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver attached as writers helps settle minds as well, after their sci-fi revamp made genetically enhanced monkeys relevant again. I was certainly impressed with their adventurous tone and penchant for big screen storytelling, and I believe Jurassic Park 4 is in safe hands.
As for the big screen adaptation of Roald Dahl’s popular book The BFG, Kennedy gave this brief update:
“[It’s] live action,” she confirmed, “[and] pretty far along.”
Doom fans should quell their excitement right now, as BFG stands for “Big Friendly Giant.”
Following Dahl’s book, the story centers around a girl named Sophie and a friendly dream-spreading giant who must prevent other meaner giants from eating innocent civilians.
So while Jurassic Park 4 is dreamed up and The BFG finishes production, we can rest a tad bit easier knowing quality will be the focus over quantity. But as a fan of the original Jurassic Park, it would be nice if all parties involved could hurry up! Not to be pushy or anything…
What do you think? Will Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver be able to create a Jurassic Park 4 that lives up to Kathleen Kennedy’s expectations?
