President Donald Trump has greatly shortened the time he originally gave Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop the war in Ukraine, cutting it from an initial 50 days down to about 10 to 12 days. This faster deadline shows the growing frustration with the ongoing conflict and the lack of progress in diplomatic efforts to end it.
Earlier in July, Trump had given Putin a major warning. This first ultimatum stated that if the war in Ukraine did not stop by early September, Russia and its trading partners would face harsh economic consequences. These proposed punishments included tariffs that could go as high as 100 percent. The original 50-day window was meant to allow enough time for tensions to ease, using economic pressure as the main way to push for an end to the fighting.
Speaking from Turnberry, Scotland, after a meeting with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, the American president explained why he was shortening the deadline. According to Politico, Trump said he was very disappointed with the Russian leader, feeling that despite earlier talks, no real steps toward a ceasefire had been made.
Russia now has a shorter deadline
Trump mentioned times when deals seemed to be reached, only for Russia to launch new attacks, including missile strikes on Ukrainian cities like Kyiv, which sadly killed many people, including those in a nursing home. His words suggested he had little hope that Putin would willingly end the war within the original, longer timeframe. The official announcement of this shorter deadline was expected soon after his public remarks.
The choice to speed up the ultimatum comes after months of stalled diplomacy. Despite many direct conversations between Trump and Putin, there has been no real progress toward ending the war in Ukraine. This situation is very different from what Trump claimed during his 2024 election campaign, when he confidently said he could stop the war in just one day after taking office.
Adding to the lack of progress, the third round of peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, held recently, ended without any agreement on a ceasefire. This failure to find common ground in negotiations has clearly added to the American president’s increasing frustration.
In recent weeks, Trump’s public statements about Putin have changed noticeably, becoming much more critical. As attempts to arrange a ceasefire have repeatedly failed, he has started to voice rare and stronger criticisms of the Russian president.
