What happens when a major studio realizes a movie title might not bring in the largest possible audience haul? They change it, of course. Which is why Jack The Giant Killer has transformed (with or without the help of some magic beans) into Jack The Giant Slayer, as Bryan Singer’s twisted telling of the famous fairytale has buddied up with a more “family-friendly” title.
The whole change-up strikes us as rather odd given that “slayer” isn’t exactly a word that goes down nice and easy with children either, but we suppose it’s less definitive than pegging a small boy as a “killer” – although we still hope Jack does away with that giant properly and without a lingering sense of remorse weighing on his shoulders. The point is that kids apparently hate killing but are okay with slaying.
The film, which stars X-Men: First Class‘s Nicholas Hoult, is set to bring an old and relatively exhausted fairy story into the 21st century with scenes of CGI and ironic meta-references. Although it was originally set for release this summer, it was placed unlovingly on the back-burner and ambiguously pointed towards 2013. That’s changed too, as it has a new release date of May 1, 2013 (2D, 3D and IMAX).
Jack the Giant Slayer also stars Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Bill Nighy and Eleanor Tomlinson.
So what are your thoughts on the new title? Has this supposedly adult-take on the story lost its dark edge, or does it just invoke wonderful memories of Buffy?
