Meghan Markle reveals who said “I love you” first between her and Harry

Meghan Markle is back on our screens with the return of her Netflix baking show, With Love, Meghan. Like the last series, it offers viewers a little bit more of an insight into the Duchess of Sussex’s world as she opens up about her personal life and relationship with Prince Harry.

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry met and fell in love in 2016, little did they know what the future would hold at the time. In her latest series, Meghan reminisces about the early days of her relationship with the prince. Speaking with Queer Eye fashion expert and friend of Meghan’s Tan France the duchess answered the most important question people want to know: who said the L-word first?

Did Meghan or Harry say ‘I love you’ first?

“He told me,” Meghan told her friend, to which he replied, “Oh, that’s nice. You’re starting to blush. I’ll stop this line of questioning.” Meghan also spoke with France about when and where Harry confessed his feelings to her.

The couple began dating in July 2016, they had two back to back dates in London before going on a third date to Botswana, a country very close to Prince Harry’s heart (and one he still visits frequently). It was on this trip that Meghan claims Harry first uttered the sacred L-word to her. It was also here that the future Duchess of Sussex would fall in love with the prince over the course of their five day trip as well.

“You really get to know each other when you’re in a little tent together and it’s like, ‘What is that outside the tent?’ ‘That’s an elephant.’ ‘Are we going to be safe?’ ‘Yeah, you’re safe.’”

A five day camping trip amongst the wildlife of Botswana certainly sounds like an intense third date, most people would probably prefer a cinema date, or maybe some mini-golf.

It didn’t take long for the couple to start planning for marriage

Of course, from there the rest, as they say, is history. By the end of 2017 Harry had proposed to Meghan and their wedding was set for the following year. The couple were married on 19 May 2018, less than two years after their first date together.

Despite the rocky road the pair have travelled since their marriage they appear to be doing relatively well for themselves. The couple fell out of favor with the public after choosing to step down from their royal duties in 2020 and while their reputation has somewhat suffered, they’ve been able to create a life together in Montecito. This past May marks seven years since the Sussexes were married and to think it all started in a tent in Botswana.
