Slain Chicago mom Romeca Meeks knew ex was a threat as her suspected murderer seeks to exploit the law to escape justice

The shooting happened at school drop-off.

Murdered Chicago mom Romeca Meeks had a restraining order against her ex and the father of her son, according to multiple reports on social media from accounts following the case.

Meanwhile, Meeks’ ex’s new partner, the mother of some of his other children and who allegedly pulled the trigger, has claimed self-defense and says she has an open-carry license in Illinois. It’s unclear if Meeks knew his ex’s new partner or if a motive has been determined. So far, Chicago police have not released any official comment on the matter.

On September 8, 2025, Meeks, 31, was reportedly shot and killed after school drop-off in Chicago. The incident followed a physical altercation between Meeks, her ex, and his partner, who both confronted Meeks.

News of the attack has come primarily from social media, but reports say Meeks’ ex, Carlos “Losos” Way, put her in a headlock while his new partner shot and killed Meeks at close range. Social media reports say police arrested the shooter, identified as Holly Johnson, at the scene. Witnesses describe Way and Johnson as the aggressors.

One social media comment noted, “Did you see it on the news? There was a lady in the crowd who was not going to let that woman get away. She kept telling the police who shot her and what happened. Horrible, horrible situation and my heart goes out to her son.”

The morning of the attack, Meeks reportedly shared a note written to her son, whom she dropped off at school before she died. The note said, “Happy Monday son, this is a fresh start to this day and you can start off strong. Always remain yourself, you’re the coolest, smartest and funniest kid I know. I love you so much. – Love Mommy.”
