‘I call him Puff Daddy’: Donald Trump confirms Diddy is begging for a presidential pardon

They seem pretty close.

Sean “Diddy” Combs is officially trying to find his way out of a federal prison sentence after President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday that the music mogul has requested a pardon. I honestly can’t believe how fast this whole process is moving, but if you’re facing over four years in federal prison, you’re going to try everything you can to get that coveted “get out of jail free card.”

Trump, who was speaking directly from the Oval Office, didn’t hold back when confirming the request. According to Fox, Trump admitted, “A lot of people have asked me for pardons.” And in a detail that truly adds a personal touch, “I call him Puff Daddy; he has asked me for a pardon.” That one quote tells you everything you need to know about the high-stakes political game being played here.

This whole dramatic turn comes right after Diddy was slapped with a sentence of just over four years (specifically 50 months) in federal prison last Friday. That sentencing came after his conviction on seriously heavy charges: transportation to engage in prostitution. It’s a huge, high-profile case, and it’s truly not surprising that he’s pulling out all the stops to avoid doing the time.

Diddy wants a pardon, and Trump seems like he may give it

If you’re curious about the legal strategy, former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani basically summed it up perfectly. Rahmani explained that a presidential pardon is currently Diddy’s “best chance at freedom,” and you can’t argue with that logic. On the other hand, the legal road isn’t totally closed off. Rahmani noted that Diddy can and will appeal the conviction. He can argue that the judge “improperly calculated the guidelines and considered acquitted conduct.”

This is all extremely complex legal jargon, but the simple fact is that Diddy is still fighting the outcome. Rahmani made it clear that we can expect a “strong lobbying effort by Diddy’s team in the coming days and weeks.” This story is certainly far from over, and I’d bet good money that the lobbying efforts have already begun. When you compare the speed of this pardon request against the slow pace of a traditional appeal, it feels like night and day.

The push for a pardon didn’t just happen after the judge dropped the hammer last week, either. Reports that Diddy was seeking a presidential pardon first surfaced all the way back in May, well before the rapper’s actual sentencing took place. A source who was familiar with the situation had to clear up some rumors at the time.

They made sure everyone knew that it wasn’t the official Combs trial team who was reaching out to Trump. Instead, Diddy has “many people in his orbit that are friendly with Trump and are advocating for him to be pardoned.” While the legal team was focused on sentencing and trying to block out “the noise,” it’s clear Diddy’s network was busy making moves behind the scenes.
