A popular U.K. company that makes horse treats, Likit, just issued a bizarrely specific warning to humans after their products went viral on TikTok. The trend involves people buying and eating the equine snacks for themselves, sparking concern among those who rightly questioned whether food formulated for another species is safe for us to consume.
This whole phenomenon kicked off back in October when TikToker Gracie, who is a certified “horse girl,” posted footage of herself trying a Likit treat before giving it to her equine friend, Spirit. While she wasn’t a huge fan of the banana flavor, giving it a low 2/10 rating, her video racked up over 22 million views. The apple flavor, however, was apparently a winner for both her and Spirit, and the trend spread like wildfire.
By the end of November and into December, others on TikTok began rushing out to buy these snacks for their own consumption. However, you should never eat anything made for animals. It’s only cute when animals eat each other’s food, not when humans do it.
Stop eating things meant for animals
This is where the story gets serious. Likit, the company, had to formally address the fact that people were rushing to consume products formulated for large grazing animals. They put a clear statement in their FAQ to cover themselves. Likit confirmed that the treats are made from human food-grade raw materials, but here’s the crucial distinction: they aren’t manufactured in a human food factory.
This is a massive red flag, and honestly, if it’s not made in a proper, regulated food factory, you shouldn’t be eating it. The FAQ clearly states, “Likits are for horses, not humans!” The real issue isn’t just the factory standards: it’s the absolutely terrifying nutritional profile.
Horses and humans have wildly different dietary needs, especially when it comes to sugar. Likit specifically formulates these treats based on a horse’s need to consume 125 grams of sugar per hour of grazing time.
Let that number sink in for a minute. Doctors recommend we eat a maximum of 50 grams of added sugar for an entire day. Eating a treat designed to meet an hour’s worth of a horse’s grazing sugar intake is a recipe for disaster.
If you consume a sugar bomb designed for a much larger animal, you can’t be shocked when your stomach revolts. Even though there haven’t been any reported fatalities, the sheer amount of sugar in these treats means you’re taking a serious gamble with your health just for a viral video. Stick to human snacks, folks.
