Hey everyone, check out the nominees for the Best Director Oscar. Ok, fine they’re not actually the nominees for the Best Director Oscar, these are the nominees for the Director’s Guild Of America’s Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award. That being said, you can almost guarantee that these five directors will all be nominated come Oscar time as the two awards usually have the same nominees. Furthermore, it is also almost guaranteed that these five films will be included in the Best Picture race come Oscar time. Lastly, whoever wins this award, will most likely win the Oscar.
The nominees for the Outstanding Directorial Achievement Award are as follows.
Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan
David Fincher, The Social Network
Tom Hooper, The King’s Speech
Christopher Nolan, Inception
David O. Russell, The Fighter
Absolutely no surprises here, except for the obvious omission of the Coen Brothers, who really do deserve a nod for True Grit. My choice would go to Nolan for Inception, for obvious reasons. Russell did a good job with The Fighter but the acting was the real star of that film. Hooper’s The King’s Speech was enjoyable yet slightly overrated and once again, was really carried by the acting. Fincher’s The Social Network was a film that was never less than perfect but on a technical level, Inception was more impressive. Lastly Aronofsky’s Black Swan wasn’t all it was hyped up to be, at least not for me. It was an ambitious piece of work by Aronofsky, and he should be applauded for that, but I don’t think he deserves the award for it.
Who do you think should win?
