Do The Right Thing writer and director Spike Lee is currently working on his remake of the Korean thriller Oldboy, although it’s the subject of much debate as to whether or not he’s doing the right thing (see what we did there?) in messing with an established classic.

Opinions aside, a brand spanking new synopsis has just been released for your reading pleasure:

The story follows an advertising executive (Josh Brolin) who is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement without any indication of his captor’s motive. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his bizarre and torturous punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment. His quest for revenge leads him into an ill-fated relationship with a young social worker (Elizabeth Olsen) and ultimately to an elusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his salvation.”

So it’s the same story, really, with an added five years to Brolin’s confinement period. Fans of the original can breath a sigh of relief, then (for now), as Lee doesn’t seem to have messed around with the basic plot.

Oldboy also has a new release date of October 13th, 2013, which means that it’s still a year away. We’re beginning to feel like Josh Brolin on this one. Without the extreme nature of the punishment. Or the psychological repercussions. It’s a long time, is what we mean, all right?

Let us know your thoughts on the remake in the comments section below.
