Chris Palmer‘s family says that previously unknown information about Palmer’s health has led them to ask that all active search efforts come to an end.
In a public message, Chris’ father, Bren Palmer, shared that the family recently learned Chris had been facing a terminal illness before he went missing. That information, he said, has reframed how they now view his final days and the choices he may have made before he vanished.
“Christopher loved the outdoors and valued his independence. The treatments ahead would have taken much of that away, and he did not want that future for himself,” Bren’s update said.
Palmer “perished at sea”
According to the family, since Chris’ personal belongings were located along the coastline, they believe he entered the ocean and died there. “As heartbreaking as this is, we have found a measure of peace in that understanding,” Bren wrote.
The update comes after days of searching by volunteers, first responders, and community groups who mobilized to help locate Chris. Bren expressed gratitude for those efforts and named the United Cajun Navy among the groups that assisted.
“We would like to thank the United Cajun Navy and every volunteer, first responder, and community member who searched for our son. It has been profoundly humbling to see so many people care for someone they never met. Our family is at peace and asks that Christopher’s memory and the safety of others be respected as we seek closure,” Bren’s post said.
Palmer’s dog Zoey
In a separate post, Bren also addressed online speculation about Christopher’s dog, Zoey, who had also gone missing.
“This will the only time I comment on Christophers beloved Zoey,” he wrote. “This for those that dont know him or us that have been speculating. She was a beautiful well behaved 11 year old German Shepard that he loved. She has been by his side since she was a puppy. Zoey was very sick took several medications and also had [severe] hip dysplasia.”
“Its our belief that our son spent some time in the woods to be with her in her final days. Evidence of that was a shovel found in his truck, and after she passed, he laid her to rest and continued his trip to the coast. We thank everyone for their concern and prayers for Zoey,” Bren said.
“We are deeply proud of the man Christopher was, and we hope his story brings awareness to the emotional and mental burdens people can face during serious medical challenges,” Bren wrote.
Chris’ disappearance drew widespread attention as searchers combed wooded areas and coastal regions after he was reported missing. Details about his vehicle, his dog, and evidence that he had traveled off course added to the concern. The discovery of his belongings and the fact that a kayak was missing ultimately shifted the search toward the water.
Now, with new context about his health and the family’s belief that he perished at sea, his loved ones say they are in a place of painful acceptance. They are asking the public to honor that understanding, respect their request to end search efforts, and allow them the space to grieve and seek closure.
