Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche confirmed that federal investigators cannot follow up on many recent tips the FBI got about President Donald Trump‘s connection with Jeffrey Epstein. This happened after the Department of Justice released millions of documents to the public. The problem comes down to the quality of information the FBI received. Many tips were sent anonymously or based on second-hand information. Blanche said this type of data is “not something that can be really investigated.”
According to The Hill, Federal investigators need solid evidence from people who can be identified. Without that, they cannot start a serious investigation. These tips came through the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center and were part of nearly 3 million documents the DOJ released on Friday about the convicted sex offender.
The FBI did try to follow up on the tips, which were compiled in August and labeled as information from “Trump accusers.” They contacted many of the people who called in. However, they could not reach everyone because some tipsters did not leave contact information.
The challenge of following anonymous leads in high-profile cases
Blanche pointed out that President Trump is not the only public figure mentioned in the massive index. The list of tips also included claims about various other politicians and famous people. The recent document release has revealed troubling connections between Epstein and other celebrities, showing how widespread his network was. “There are all kinds of people that are mentioned in the quote ‘Epstein files’ that we had to look at,” Blanche said.
The index with tips specifically naming President Trump was removed from the DOJ’s public database by Sunday morning. It is unclear why the list was taken down. The DOJ has been contacted for comment but has not explained the removal. Former Mar-a-Lago staff members had previously raised concerns about the relationship between Trump and Epstein years ago.
A general search for “Trump” in the DOJ’s database still shows more than 3,000 results. Most of these are not tips but references to the president in articles or documents that Epstein sent or received. This shows how connected Epstein’s world was with high-level politics and celebrity.
Without sources that can be traced and verified, investigators cannot move forward with these particular allegations. The FBI needs people to provide their contact information and firsthand knowledge for any investigation to proceed.
