White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said she cannot guarantee that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents will not be stationed outside polling locations during this year’s midterm elections. She made this statement during a press briefing when asked directly if the administration plans to deploy enforcement officers near voting booths in November.
According to Unilad, the question came after former White House strategist Steve Bannon made controversial comments on his podcast earlier that week. He claimed, “We’re going to have ICE surround the polls come November.”
When asked if President Trump was considering this, Leavitt called the question ridiculous but did not give a clear “no.” She said, “I mean, frankly, that’s a very silly, hypothetical question.” She added “That’s not something I’ve ever heard the president consider, no, I can’t guarantee that an ICE agent won’t be around a polling location in November.” However, her refusal to completely rule it out has raised concerns.
The administration faces mounting pressure as midterms approach
The midterm elections on November 3 are extremely important. All House seats and thirty-three Senate seats will be decided. The elections come during a time of heavy criticism of the administration’s immigration policies and ICE operations across the country.
Trump is worried about the midterms, which happen just two years into his second term. He has openly said he fears being impeached if Republicans lose control of Congress. “You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” he stated. “I’ll get impeached.” The administration has been scrambling to address Trump’s controversial statements on various issues in recent weeks.
Immigration has become a major issue for voters, especially after tragic events earlier this year. ICE operations in Minneapolis have faced harsh criticism. At least eight people died in ICE dealings or custody in the first few weeks of 2026, including Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Even the National Rifle Association publicly criticized these killings.
A federal judge recently delivered a harsh message to the Trump administration while ordering the release of five-year-old Liam Ramos. ICE agents detained Liam and his father on January 20 after they returned home from school in Columbia Heights. A photo of Liam being taken away wearing his Spiderman backpack angered many Americans, especially after reports said he became sick while detained in Texas.
District Judge Fred Biery ordered Liam and his father released. He strongly criticized the administration, calling their actions an “ill-conceived and incompetently-implemented government pursuit of daily deportation quotas” that includes “traumatizing children.”
He also said administrative warrants issued by the executive branch to itself don’t work, explaining, “That is called the fox guarding the henhouse.” The judge wrote that those with a “perfidious lust for unbridled power and the imposition of cruelty in its quest know no bounds and are bereft of human decency.”
He included the viral image of Liam and the Bible verse John 11:35: “Jesus wept.” The White House has also faced criticism for confirming military force as an option in other controversial policy areas. With this level of criticism from judges and the public, the question of ICE agents at polling locations is clearly more than just a hypothetical issue as the midterm elections get closer.
