The Trump administration just finalized a massive new rule that gives it the power to fire an estimated 50,000 federal workers who handle policy roles, effectively gutting decades of civil service safeguards. This new policy, officially dubbed Schedule Policy/Career, converts a huge swath of the federal workforce into a status similar to that of political appointees.
According to The Hill, ff you’re one of these workers, you can now be fired “at will.” This is awful news for anyone who relies on the stability and nonpartisanship of our government, because it means expertise can be replaced by pure political loyalty almost instantly.
The administration hasn’t exactly hidden its reasoning behind this move. The goal is clearly to make it easier to dismiss those employees that the White House believes are hindering President Trump’s agenda. This is a direct response to the president’s claims of a “Deep State” working within the federal government to try to undermine him.
Trump just wants boot lickers
Scott Kupor, the director of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), which created the rule, defended the policy. He insisted this isn’t about differing viewpoints, stating, “The only impact Policy/Career has is if their disagreement leads them to then try to actively thwart or undermine the execution of those priorities, then that [is] behavior that we want to declare to people is not acceptable.”
However, federal worker unions are staunchly opposed. Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), called the rule a direct assault on the merit-based civil service. He said that the OPM is “rebranding career public servants as ‘policy’ employees, silencing whistleblowers, and replacing competent professionals with political flunkies without any neutral, independent protections against politicization and arbitrary abuse of power.”
The most concerning aspect of this change is the rollback of whistleblower protections. Under the new rule, Schedule Policy/Career employees can no longer take complaints of waste, fraud, or abuse to the independent Office of Special Counsel. Instead, they are required to report wrongdoing internally to the agency’s general counsel.
It is a role typically filled by an administration political appointee. Which seems like a recipe for silence, not accountability, with some reporters already being laid off, and some complaints being filed away.
The administration doubled down on its belief that federal workers are the problem. An OPM official speaking with reporters slammed public servants, claiming that the recent leaking of the rule itself proves that employees are actively working against the administration. The official said, “We have a boatload of empirical data that supports the idea that there is misconduct and policy resistance among the career civil servants.” They characterized the situation as a “crisis” due to poor performance and misconduct.
The AFGE and organizations like Democracy Forward had previously sued to block the policy during its development. They made it clear they plan to return to court immediately.
