Although the original Wanted probably has its fans, it’s hardly the kind of movie that has audiences rioting in the streets, brandishing fire and screaming out for a sequel. Despite that, Universal hired the original screenwriters to get the project down on paper last September.
It was said then, too, that Angelia Jolie – who starred in the original flick – was set to return for the next installment, although there’s been no news on the front until now. Which is to say, Jolie won’t be making an appearance in Wanted 2, despite the fact that – for monetary purposes, of course – she’s probably really, really wanted by the producers. But her lack of appearance does actually makes a whole lot of sense since her character is, you know, dead.
Derek Haas, the writer tasked with figuring all this out, has explained that a sequel would bring in a brand spanking new love interest for James McAvoy‘s character, Wesley (unfortunately, yes, that is his name). Here’s what Haas said:
“For various reasons, we didn’t connect with what Universal wanted to do creatively. A little bit of what Timur [Bekmambetov, director] wanted to do. So we just sort of bowed out gracefully. [But then] we got that call that you always love as a screenwriter. ‘Can you guys please come back?’ We loved the world. That experience was great. We said, ‘Well here’s what we want to do with the sequel.’ And they said, ‘Okay.’
“It’s ‘Where is Wesley four years after the events of the first movie?’ The only thing I can tell you is that Wesley is now, four years later, recruiting a young woman who is in his situation in the first movie. She’s got a shitty life. He’s sort of in the Fox role. This new girl is brought into the world.”
Hm. Despite the fact that there seems to be actual production stuff going on, we’re still not convinced that anybody is really bothered about this sequel turning up. I mean, we’re sure that the creators and the writers and any potential actors and extras are bothered, but…
