The internet has crowned a fresh-faced king of the people. They come in the form of a highschooler who gave one of his fellow students a fist-shaped reality check after they recorded themselves loudly and proudly proclaiming their love for ICE while walking down the corridors of his school.
The viral incident has got people talking online and while violence should never be glorified, many have argued that the ICE-supporting-disruptor was intentionally being provocative and relying on his fellow students being too afraid of getting in trouble to stand up to him. The clip was posted to Instagram by a young online influencer known as “Spud.”
Spud attended an anti-ICE rally being held at the school according to Lake & McHenry County Scanner and in the video the youth can be heard shouting as he walks down the halls, “I support ICE,” when a passerby challenges him he states, “I don’t know what’s crazy about this.” Then he’s confronted by another student who simply tells him, “Yeah I’m going to punch you in the face.” The ICE supporting student then responds, “You’ll get in trouble for that,” he is then swiftly punched in the face by his fellow student.
TikTok has some interesting opinions
The interaction has been shared everywhere online with all sorts of people giving their two cents on the matter. Most seem to be of the opinion that the ICE student got what was coming, one TikToker, “angerandautism” claimed that the “ICE kid” acted as a perfect demonstration of the way “bad people rely on good people following the rules.” He went on to point out the double standard, “even when the bad people are breaking the rules, they can continue to get away with it.”
He may be on to something there and others on TikTok agree with another TikToker, Laura Clery, stating, “I do not condone violence, except for this case.” Meanwhile, the student who punched Spud has been turned into a meme online for his no-nonsense stance.
Of course, some did take issue with the violent response, “oh so assaulting people because they have different opinions is ok now?” One commenter wrote under angerandautism’s video. He would later post a second video claiming that Spud’s behavior was in “bad faith.”
Whatever the case, it seems for many online the student who did the punching is being received as a hero while the other kid is being given very little sympathy. It is currently unclear what the repercussions of the incident were, whether the student who punched Spud faced criminal charges, (which some people called for), is unknown.
