Patrick Dempsey, beloved for his role as McDreamy, recently shared a deeply emotional tribute to his former Grey’s Anatomy costar, Eric Dane, who passed away at 53. Dempsey’s confession about Dane’s final moments has really stunned fans, painting a poignant picture of his friend’s courageous battle.
US Magazine reported that Dempsey spoke about the sad news during a radio appearance on Friday, explaining, “I just woke up this morning and it was very sad to read the news. It’s hard to put into words. I feel really so sad for his children.” Dane died on Thursday, February 19, almost a year after publicly revealing his ALS diagnosis.
Dempsey then opened up about Dane’s last days, sharing some incredibly difficult details. Dempsey had been texting with Dane just about a week before his passing, noting the rapid decline in his health. “He was bedridden and it was very hard for him to swallow so the quality of his life was deteriorating so rapidly,” Dempsey revealed, adding that Dane was also beginning to lose his ability to speak.

Despite the sadness surrounding Dane’s final days, Dempsey also took time to cherish the wonderful memories of their time together on Grey’s Anatomy. He fondly recalled Dane’s iconic first scene on the show, where he famously emerged from a shower in just a towel. “He was the funniest man, he was such a joy to work with and I want to just remember him in that spirit because any time he was on set, he brought so much fun to it,” Dempsey said.
He highlighted Dane’s great sense of humor and how easy he was to work with, noting they got along instantly. Dempsey even joked about Dane’s memorable entrance, saying it made him feel “completely out of shape and insignificant.”
Dempsey emphasized that there was never any competition between them, only “this wonderful mutual respect.” He described Dane as “wickedly intelligent” and said he would always remember the fun moments they shared. Beyond his acting, Dempsey also commended Dane for his incredible work in raising awareness for ALS during the final months of his life. He called it an “incredible job at bringing awareness to this horrible disease.”
Dempsey noted, that we all need to “celebrate every day like it’s our last day.” He urged everyone to be grateful for every moment, spend time with family, and strive to be kind and loving, especially in a world filled with so much crisis and tragedy.
