SA charges against husband of Trump Cabinet member dropped, but the details of who made that call are raising serious questions

The sexual assault investigation into Dr. Shawn DeRemer, the husband of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, has been officially closed. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed that their investigation ended after a joint review with the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the District of Columbia found “no evidence of a crime.”

Dr. Shawn DeRemer, 57, an anesthesiologist, was accused of inappropriately touching two female staffers at the Department of Labor headquarters on December 18. A report detailing “a sexual contact against her will” was filed with the MPD on January 24. The alleged incidents were reportedly caught on internal security cameras. DeRemer has “categorically” denied all the allegations.

According to The Daily Beast, the investigation involved significant steps. MPD detectives from the Sexual Assault Unit were actively involved and reportedly searched Secretary Chavez-DeRemer’s office on February 5. Authorities also looked through the workstations of her aides, though sources indicated the Labor Secretary was aware of the search but not the specific reason behind it.

The USAO’s decision to drop charges carries added weight given who is now running the office

The decision not to pursue charges came from the USAO, which is now led by Jeanine Pirro, appointed to the position by President Donald Trump in 2025. Pirro, 74, spent years as a Fox News host from 2011 until her confirmation. Her recent attempt to clear Steve Bannon’s criminal record has also drawn scrutiny toward her decisions in high-profile cases. This is just one of several controversies tied to Trump’s cabinet facing serious pressure in recent months.

Despite the allegations and police involvement, the USAO, along with the Federal Protective Service, declined to pursue charges against DeRemer. Based on this finding, the MPD concluded its investigation. However, DeRemer was still banned from entering the agency’s headquarters after police first received reports about his alleged misconduct.

DeRemer’s attorney, James Bell, claimed the allegations were “a complete fabrication manufactured by Labor Department insiders vying for the Secretary of Labor’s position.” This situation comes alongside separate controversy surrounding Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer herself. The Labor Department’s inspector general has launched an internal probe into her and some of her closest aides.

She is facing allegations of “abusing her position,” including claims of an affair with a member of her security detail and drinking on the job. Trump’s cabinet meetings have also been under public scrutiny recently, including questions about Trump’s behavior during meetings.

Two of her staffers, including Chief of Staff Jihun Han and his deputy Rebecca Wright, were placed on leave in January because they were allegedly “involved and have knowledge” regarding Chavez-DeRemer’s actions. The secretary has denied any inappropriate behavior on her part.
